Mawson & Company, the Winchester
hair and beauty specialist, is sponsoring a category
of the Winchester Business Excellency Awards which
is aimed at helping customers. The company's founder,
Tony Mawson, believes that, too often, the public
has to put up with poor service.
So his business, in three-storey
premises in The Square, is sponsoring the Service
Excellence category of this year's awards. "After
winning the category in 2004, it wa thought that
sponsoring the award might help to raise awareness
of issues surrounding good service and the local
economy", Mr Mawson said. "With towns competing
to attract customers, thoughtful service and a
warm and friendly welcome must go a long way to
create points of difference between us and other
centres.
"In British high streets and shopping
malls across the country, complacent and indifferent
service is meted out by poorly-trained staff who,
all too often, quite obviously don't want to be
there". Hotels, pubs, cafes, shops, estate agents
and professionals' offices, as well as hairdressers
- all could improve greatly, Mr Mawson said.
He wants to see staff taking more
pride in their job, creating a better atmosphere
for both staff and customer. That, he says, will
also improve turnover. "Whether in the service
industries or retail, the general public suffers
very poor service. "Winchester Business Awards,
and especially the Service Excellence award, must
help to raise these issues.
They must help to attract a more
discerning customer base for the whole city."
He believes winning the Service Excellence category
raised the credibility of his salon. "Mt colleagues
and my team often receive accolades from clients
and each other. To receive a public award from
outside our industry is icing on the cake."
Mawson & company's Aveda lifestyle
salon, which includes a retail area for Aveda
products and a treatment room, has increased its
client list from 2,600 to over 10,000 since it
moved to its current premises less than four years
ago. Customer service at Mawson & Company includes
a welcoming cup of tea, together with a further
complementary service such as stress-relieving
treatment, hand and arm massage or a finishing-touch
make-up.
Urging companies to enter, Mr Mawson
said: "The award has raised our positive profile
within the city's business community, the county
and beyond, making it easier to recruit staff
and attract new clients."
